Pilot Demonstration Programs
Arizona State University
- Developed the SafeZONE Program, which included workshops that increased attitudes of acceptance of individuals with differing sexual orientations
- Coordinated training initiatives for health and counseling providers; LGBT students helped facilitate discussion sessions to improve the understanding between students and providers
- Created a "Safe Place" Resource Center with information about LGBT health, issues, and events.
- Developed a website for LGBT students (www.asu.edu/safezone) which promotes healthy social events and provides information about physical and emotional health
- Assembled a comprehensive list with descriptions of campus resources and programs for LGBT students, which was added to the SafeZONE website
California State University, San Bernardino
- Implemented a social norms campaign that highlighted safer sex practices, human relationships, and HIV/STD
- Assisted with the creation of a new "Health Leadership Academy"
- Created the "Healthy Campus 2010" listserv, a network of health-related department and organization representatives across campus
- Continued activities of the Campus AIDS Awareness and Response Committee, the Student Health Advisory Committee, and the Wellness Network Luncheon Committee
Northeastern Illinois University
- Infused HIV/AIDS education into the academic curricula of four departments, using active teaching methods to engage students in HIV prevention
- Offered the HIV rapid test for NEIU students and coordinated counseling for those students taking the test
- Staffed a series of HIV/AIDS Information tables
- Organized an AIDS Awareness Week that included displays of the AIDS Quilt, panels on Living with HIV/AIDS and HIV/AIDS research and an HIV/AIDS related film
- Developed the HIV Prevention Planning Group (HPPG), which involves NEIU students, staff, and faculty. HPPG is devoted to creating and institutionalizing HIV/AIDS activities and support structures at NEIU.
Pennsylvania State University
- Created the HIV/AIDS Risk Reduction Advisory Council (HARRAC) composed of a group of diverse students
- Developed a prevention marketing campaign with the slogan "HIV/AIDS: Don't ignore it; Prevent it"
- Developed a mini-grant program, which allowed six programs to be implemented
- Identified approximately 40 Community Health Advocates (CHA's) and planned a HIV/AIDS CHA Training Session
- Co-sponsored and Sponsored Penn State's World AIDS Day, "A Closer Walk" documentary film, Who's Positive Program, and LateNight, an HIV/AIDS awareness program with a Valentine's Day theme
Prince George's Community College
- Implemented a brown bag lunch series entitled the "Wellness Brunch" with mini-presentations and discussions on a wide ranging set of health topics
- Incorporated a healthy living seminar into New Student Orientation
- Staffed monthly Information Tables to distribute l pamphlets and brochures on HIV/AIDS
- Organized an AIDS Walk on campus
- Offered monthly or twice monthly HIV testing by the County Health Department
Western Washington University
- Developed twelve social marketing interventions based on 22 focus groups which identified key health issues
- Interviewed selected students on "critical moments" - situations in which students felt that some part of their identity or their "difference" caused them to feel silenced, misunderstood, and unable to articulate their concerns.
- Developed anonymous case stories used to teach critical thinking and diversity awareness in the Freshman Interest Group Seminars (FIGS)
- Increased faculty and staff awareness of the non-biological manner in which students describe their overall health and well-being
- Increased faculty and staff understanding of their role in and impact on student well-being
