STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

Storm Sessions

"Storm Sessions" were offered to campuses between 2001 and 2002 to bring college students and administrators together to informally brainstorm and discuss campus health and related issues. Storm Sessions originated with CIRCLe Network, a nonprofit organization that developed the concept to help students become leaders in addressing challenges in the campus environment. HELP utilized the Storm Session concept as a way for campus student leaders and student affairs administrators to discuss student health issues and predisposing campus conditions. A member of the HELP staff and a member of CIRCLe Network facilitated the Storm Sessions.

Six HELP Affiliate institutions were chosen as HELP Storm Session sites:

  • Rollins College
  • State University of New York-Brockport
  • Florida International University
  • University of California, Santa Cruz
  • Colorado State University
  • Cornell University

All of these campuses indicated a strong interest in creating specific objectives to reach their ultimate goal of creating a healthy campus environment as a result of the storm sessions. HELP staff offered assistance and support to each campus as plans were made to address health and wellness promotion programs through continuing discussions between students and administrators.

Students, student affairs professionals, and administrators participating in Storm Sessions during academic year 2001-2001 identified the following as important campus health issues:

  • Stress
  • Adequate Nutrition
  • Smoking
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases
  • Alcohol and Drugs
  • Mental Health Issues (Depression, Self-Esteem)
