NASPA's Health in Higher Education Knowledge Community

The ecological model recognizes that campus health and safety are shaped through multiple levels of influence -- individual, group, institution, and community as well as public policy, geographical and societal factors. Thus, plans to develop and implement strategies that build a healthy learning environment on campus must address a broad range of variables that contribute to the well being of students. Health is affected by the systems that intersect in the academy. Therefore, plans to advance the health of students and create healthy campus communities must intersect with a wide representation partners in the faculty, Student Affairs, and administration.

The ecological model calls for a new paradigm in health services planning. This model emphasizes the need for student affairs leaders, faculty members, and administrators to share responsibility for student health, and to work together to create campus environments that support student health and wellness as these advance learning. The model is described in more detail in Leadership for a Healthy Campus.

Ultimately, students who are healthy and safe will have a better student experience, and have potential for greater academic and personal achievement.
